Take part in Love to Move for Dementia and challenge yourself to walk 10,000 steps every day of July to raise money for the British Gymnastics Foundation.

From the 1st July – 31st July 2021, join a movement of incredible fundraisers who will be walking, running, dancing or even completing their daily housework to rack up their steps in the comfort of their own environment. Not only will you be able to embrace the summer sun and improve your mobility and fitness, but the money raised through this fundraising event really could change the quality of life for somebody struggling with Dementia.

All funds raised will go to the British Gymnastics Foundation including our Love to Move programme, our seated movement and cognitive enhancement programme aimed at older people from 55 to 105. It particularly benefits people living with dementia and other cognitive disease.

What exactly is Love to Move for Dementia?

Love to Move for Dementia is a fundraising challenge where you complete 10,000 steps for every day of July 2021 (from the 1st – 31st) and fundraise for the British Gymnastics Foundation.

How does Love to Move for Dementia raise money for the British Gymnastics Foundation?

Once you’ve created your Virgin Money giving Fundraising page and have connected it to our Love to Move for Dementia event page, you can raise money by asking your friends and family to sponsor you.

When does the challenge take place?

It starts on the 1st July and ends on the 31st July 2021.

Where does the challenge take place?

Anywhere! It’s a virtual challenge in the comfort of your own environment. You can build up your 10,000 steps a day by walking around the block, running in park, through a fitness class, on your commute, in your garden or even by dancing around your kitchen while you cook up your favourite meal.

How do I sign up?

To get started you simply need to set up a fundraising page.

Follow this link to be directed to our ‘Love to Move for Dementia’ Virgin Money Giving Event Page and click on ‘Start fundraising’

Here you will be prompted to sign into your Virgin Money Giving account or create one if you have not yet registered.

Do I need to register with the British Gymnastics Foundation?

There is no requirement to register for this event.

You simply need to follow this link, click on ‘start fundraising’ and set up a fundraising page connected to ‘Love to Move for Dementia’

You can then promote your page to family and friends

There is also no minimum fundraising target, however, once the event has been completed all fundraisers raising over £100 will receive a British Gymnastics Foundation T-shirt. For all those fundraising over £300, you will receive a British Gymnastics Foundation certificate.

In order to receive you T-shirt you will need to opt into marketing communications from us here at the BGF when creating your fundraising page with Virgin Money Giving by giving us ‘marketing consent’, or please contact us at [email protected] and we can post it out to you.

What is the minimum fundraising target?

We don’t have one! But the more you fundraise the bigger the impact we can have here at the British Gymnastics Foundation – so every penny really does count.

  • £50 could fund an additional Love to Move session in a care home.
  • £100 could pay for 2 Love to Move community sessions.
  • £300 would pay to train a Love to Move deliverer

If you set up a fundraising page with Virgin money giving and connect it to our ‘Love to Move for Dementia’ Event, all donations will come through directly to us at the British Gymnastics Foundation.

How do I reach 10,000 steps every day?

There are so many ways to reach your 10,000 steps a day. Of course the obvious one increasing your walking but why not think about how you can incorporate it into your daily routine:

  • Walk a little extra on your weekly food shop
  • Dance around the kitchen while you cook up a feast
  • Take the dog for an extra walk
  • Do some gardening
  • If you are commuting to work then why not try getting off a bus or train stop early, or parking further away to give you access to more steps.
  • Take the stairs rather than the lift
  • And if you’re working from home, set a timer every hour and take on a few jumping jacks or jogging on the spot for 5-10mins at a time
  • Get out and about at lunchtime and watch the steps naturally trickle in
  • Take up running as a new hobby and you’ll be hitting over 5000 steps
  • Convert your daily exercise class into steps, whether its online or in person
  • Meet a friend for a socially distanced walk
How do I record my steps count?

The easiest way is using the step count on the fitness tracker your phone. You can also download a ‘free steps tracer’ app from your app store.

If you have a Fitbit or a watch that counts your steps, this could make it even easier. Both Fitbit and Strava connect to your fundraising page.

How do I promote my challenge?

Spread the word and tell all your friends and family! Don’t be shy, everyone will be so excited to hear about the challenge you will be taking on.

Social media, emails and texts are always a great way to connect with others and get the word out there, but don’t forget about the old fashioned method of word of mouth!

How do we connect with you via social media?

If you’re posting up any pictured on social media while taking part in Love to Move for Dementia, we’d love to hear about it!

Use the hashtag #lovetomovefordementia so we can follow your journey!

You can also connect with us via social media on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram

Can I complete this challenge with my friends and family?

Absolutely, the more the merrier – get them all moving and encourage them to set up a fundraising page too! Having company on your walks or at your local fitness classes can be a game changer. We want you to enjoy the challenge and have as much fun as possible.

Improvements to your health, fitness and mental wellbeing is just as important to us as your fundraising contribution to our challenges.

When will I receive my British Gymnastics Foundation T-shirt or certificate?

These will be posted out to you after the July event, providing we have your contact details and t-shirt size.

I haven’t received my British Gymnastics T-shirt or Certificate, but I have fundraised the required amount. What should I do?

Please contact us directly and we can get this sorted for you. Drop us an email at [email protected]
